Social/Emotional Learning Strategies
Toddlerhood (1-3)
Emotion Mirror Station: Set up a small mirror with pictures of different facial expressions. Encourage toddlers to look at themselves in the mirror and help them make facial expressions. Then identify the different facial expressions you are making (sad, happy, angry, surprised).
Turn-Taking Games: Have children get into small groups and take turns completing a task. This task could include building blocks, kicking a ball or throwing a ball.
Early Childhood (3-5)
Feelings Check-In Chart: Students may use pictures or emojis to identify how they are feeling. This occurs when the students are being welcomed into the classroom for the start of the day.
Puppet Problem Solving: Act out a scenario using puppets. Have the students come up with solutions and feelings. Explore empathy and conflict skills.
Middlehood (6-10)
Morning Meeting Check-In: Start the day by allowing students to discuss and share what they did the night before. Allow them to also share their feelings and emotions or concerns. This creates a sense of belong and allows them to prepare to settle in to start their learning.
Social Stories: Using acting out scenarios or social stories to explore friendships, frustration management, or bullying scenarios. This helps students develop empathy and positive responses.
